Story
In October 2014 I received a phone call from my mum saying 'Angie has been in a car accident, she isn't going to make it, get to the hospital.'
Angie is my Aunty, my mum's little sister. She had been in a car accident with a 6 ton lorry near her home in Evenly in the UK. She had received severe shearing injuries to her brain, the worst kind of brain injury caused when a force is exerted causing the different parts of the brain with different densities to slide over each other, causing millions of microscopic tears in the brain.
It was not thought that Angie would wake from her coma, or if she did we were warned that she would be severely brain damaged.
However, a shearing brain injury had obviously never met Angie before - and she has defied all of everything in the world by being released from rehabilitation hospital in March, just 5 months after her accident.
Angie is a force to be reckoned with and this injury was obviously not going to keep her down. There is a very long way to go yet, but she is defying medical knowledge and expectation everyday and is frankly a total hero.
However, it has become apparent that one of the main reasons Angie survived in those all important first few moments/hours is due to the incredible speed with which she was air lifted to hospital, and the care she received from the Air Ambulance Service.
Despite the incredibly important job that the service does it receives no Government funding and relies completely on charitable donations.
Angie wouldn't be here today if it werent' for the incredible work of the Air Ambulance Service, and in my book that deserves at least a good head of hair!
I will also be donating the hair I have shaved off (it's really quite long) to the Little Princess Trust, helping to provide real hair wigs to children across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair through cancer treatments.
