Story
Every story is different and this is Jamie & I's - ....Life changed overnight for us in September 2011 when Steve collapsed with, what was later diagnosed, as a grade IV malignant brain tumour.
This horrible illness gradually stripped away Steve’s independence, confidence and mobility and, for seven months, life revolved around endless hospital appointments and stays. It was an scary, exhausting and, at many times, lonely journey until, in May 2012, Steve started attending day care every Thursday at St Margaret of Scotland Hospice in Clydebank.
From the minute Professor John Welsh and his amazing team at St Margaret’s became part of our lives things became so much easier. Not only did Steve finally receive the care that he deserved but the team also provided wonderful support to Jamie and I.
The staff were there for all three of us every step of the way as Steve’s health deteriorated and were there to support every physical and emotional wobble that hit us….and there were many!
For the last part of his life Steve became an inpatient at St Margaret’s and we were overwhelmed by the level of care and compassion provided by every single member of staff.
The staff at St Margaret’s were especially good to Jamie and, as he keeps telling everyone, his daddy was blessed to have been there. He, as I do, believe that every individual in need of specialist palliative care should have access to a facility like St Margaret’s and we promised Steve to do all we could to support this wonderful charity in Clydebank.
