Story
Surviving Winter 2016 is a plea for local people who do not need their winter fuel allowance to donate it to the Community Foundation, who will use it to boost the capacity of voluntary organisations, who provide invaluable help and advice to people who need extra assistance in preparing for, and dealing with, the costs of the winter months.
Last year, Surviving Winter raised over £20,000 to support
fuel poverty projects across the region. One organisation to benefit was Carers Northumberland who received an award of £2,660 to provide information and advice sessions to carers in Northumberland.
Sharon Spurling, Chief Executive of Carers Northumberland explained:
“Our advice service provides information, advice and guidance on finance, benefits, housing, care support, condition information and advice around the Care Act changes to many people in our community. Thanks to a grant from Surviving Winter we have been able to provide in-house advice and support to carers on fuel poverty and energy use.
“In the last 6 months we have been able to identify where carers may be fuel poor and where they can seek increased benefits or obtain rebates whilst working with them to look at their future fuel management and energy saving techniques.”
One carer at Carers Northumberland was able to apply for a
free replacement energy efficient boiler, because it was identified that she qualified under the British Gas Energy Tax because she was living with her partner who has a disability. Other carers have been supported to change energy providers, with one carer saving around £40 per month.
Jon Goodwin, Senior Philanthropy Advisor at the Community
Foundation added:
“Through Surviving Winter we are able to collectively pool the resources of the community to make a difference to those most in need. By supporting our campaign you will help make the difference on whether someone can eat or heat their home, and give someone back their independence. This is a choice that no one should have to make, and if
you do not need your winter fuel allowance this year then please donate it to Surviving Winter.”
