Story

Drinks, canapes, private art view and live auction on 10th November to raise funds for The Ambrosoli Trust.

Founded this year to build on work done over the previous decade, The Ambrosoli Trust aims to advance healthcare and education in Africa, primarily in Uganda, by raising funds towards sustainable projects. For now, our focus is on Dr Ambrosoli Memorial Health Centre in Kaliro, Uganda, but there is considerable potential to expand our project-based work more broadly in the future.

THE TEAM
Founder and Chairman: Laura Griffith-Jones
Treasurer: Richard Griffith-Jones
Trustees: Marguerite Griffith-Jones, Henrietta Dehn and Dr Rebecca Lancaster

THE STORY
Back in 2006, founder Laura Griffith-Jones travelled to Uganda and spent five months living in the rural town of Kaliro in eastern Uganda. Her home during that time was the Dr Ambrosoli Memorial Health Centre, run by a wonderful couple, Dr Margaret Onyot and her late husband Denis. She was so shocked by the conditions at the centre that she vowed to do something to help

So in 2010, she sought the help of the Malcolm Rankin, Founder of the admirable and longstanding charity FOAG (Farmers’ Overseas Action Group), which supports several agricultural, medical and educational projects in Uganda. Dr Ambrosoli Health Centre was adopted by FOAG as an associated project and, since then, around £20,000 has been raised to improve the centre.

With the foundation of The Ambrosoli Trust this year, the hope is that even more can be achieved for this project and, in the future, many more, too.

DR AMBROSOLI MEMORIAL HEALTH CENTRE, KALIRO, UGANDA
Although predominately a maternity hospital, it is also a welcoming place for anyone unwell in the area. Other diseases treated are Malaria, HIV and Typhoid. Run by the wonderful Dr Margaret Onyot, it carries out weekly trips to local villages, where they immunise new-born babies. Our Project Coordinator, ensures the centre is running efficiently and sends us regular updates. The centre is self-sufficient but the larger-scale improvements they cannot afford – this is where The Ambrosoli Trust comes in.

PAST ACHIEVEMENTS
Since 2010, we have raised £20,000 through various fundraising efforts, which has transformed the centre.

THE FUNDRAISER ON 10 NOVEMBER 2015
We aim to raise a further £10,000, which will go towards the following:
• An ambulance: The centre urgently needs a means of transport to transfer patients to Iganga District Hospital in an emergency.
• A solar power system: A back-up power system is needed, so that lights and medicine fridges continue to work during the frequent power-cuts.
• New bathroom facilities: The bathrooms and loos need to be rebuilt and properly tiled to improve hygiene.

As you can see, a little goes such a long way in Uganda, so please attend the party, enjoy yourselves and give generously! Your help is hugely appreciated.

RCN 1164747
The Farmers Overseas Action Group, FOAG, is an independent charity whose mission is to aid social and economic development in Uganda’s rural communities. FOAG provides support to 12 projects in four key sectors; health, education, economic empowerment and the environment, with the overall goal of alleviating poverty. FOAG concentrates on small scale constructive action for community development through the funding of innovative projects that are often too small for the objectives of larger international charities. FOAG was founded in 1981 by a nucleus of Worcestershire farming families to practically address the needs of Uganda’s agricultural development. The core group has expanded over the years and is now supported by an ever increasing number of Associate Members and organisations. FOAG works in a direct and personal way and ensures that all projects are monitored on a regular basis. (www.foag.co.uk)
