Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

On 16th July 2016, we drove from the Isle of Man to Mongolia - a good 10,000 miles - all in the name of charity, in the infamous Mongol Rally. We were robbed, spent 2 days on a10 hour ferry, got deported, drove 21 hour days, got very ill, had car problems through several countries, saw a grim crime scene, spent hours at borders, got lost, camped next to a minefield, battled awful roads, and narrowly avoided high speed collisions. It was no picnic! But we did it, and we would like to continue raising money for Wish Upon A Dream, who grant wishes to terminally ill children living on the Isle of Man, and also Cool Earth who work alongside indigenous villages to halt rainforest destruction.

This page is for donations to Wish Upon A Dream only. We have a team page which shows all charities we are raising for, at the bottom of this page.

So What The Hell Is The Mongol Rally?

If we had a dollar for every time we had to answer that question, we’d have enough for an actually suitable rally car. The Mongol Rally is a leisurely Sunday drive across 10,000 miles and two continents starting in London and ending in Ulaan Ude, Russia after passing through Mongolia. There is no route, no back up, no support, and the only rules (besides needing to raise some serious dollar for charity) is the car must be hilariously under-powered.

The team consists of a Kirsty (a Manx girl in a hot dog suit), and JD (an American who wishes he had a beard), and the Purple Turtle (who may be a car, but has feelings just like you and me!).

Paradoxically, this footloose and fancy free trip we’re planning is actually a logistical nightmare. We’ve got three team members in three countries and we have to coordinate visas which means knowing routes and times and booking hotels in advance with letters of invitation, and we’ve had to find a car and insure it for a dozen countries, we’ve got to raise money for charity, which means finding sponsors and organizing a social media campaign. So we need to plan like we’re taking a bus full of pensioners on a weekend holiday, whilst leaving space for adventure. Hardwiring chaos.

The Purple Turtle was purchased by the Donatellos for a bag of gourmet Smokey Bacon Crisps and has literally never failed to drive to Mongolia before.
