Story

On the 15th September 2012 I will be flying to Jordan to cycle 400km, over four days, from the Dead Sea to the Red Sea. I will be doing this to raise money for the Institute of Cancer Research (ICR).

My Uncle Steven was diagnosed with esophageal and stomach cancer in June of 2011. After a brave fight he sadly lost his short lived battle on the 22nd of August at only 50 years old.

My Uncle was a fighter throughout this battle and he never gave up hope. His determination and strength was truly inspirational to me. Anyone who was there at this time was amazed by his unbelievably positive attitude towards his fight. He never lost the ability to bring happiness to all those he came in contact with. He is the reason that I have for wanting to help raise money for the ICR; that will help fund research into Cancer. Training for, and doing this cycle will be challenging, but it will be nothing compared to what my Uncle, and many others, have had to endure while battling this terrible disease.

Steven had an amazing ability to connect with and understand people. Whenever anybody came into contact with him he made them feel important and left a lasting impression. He cared about people and was a very special person. His passing has left a great hole in mine and my family’s hearts, specifically the love of his life, my Uncle Michael. By raising money for this cause in my Uncle’s name, I hope to capture his positive and generous spirit.

The Institute of Cancer Research is one of the world's top cancer research organisations and the only one in Europe directly involved in all stages of cancer research, from genetics through to drug development. The ICR’s world-leading scientists work tirelessly to continue making progress in the ongoing fight against cancer, but they need help now, and in the future, to realise their ultimate goal: to see an end to cancer as a life threatening disease.

I know you get asked a lot to give to worthy causes but please help me support this great cause and my effort to raise money for ICR in their aims towards not only extending the lives of patients, but changing the way cancer research is being progressed. Any donation, big or small, is welcomed and greatly appreciated. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

Thank you.

Becca
