Story
While Ghana is often seen as one of Africa’s more developed nations there are still many on-going issues. The Old Fadama slum is located North-West of Accra’s Central Business District in Ghana. It is home to more than 100,000 people and covers around 4 acres of land. Residents live in extreme poverty as due to their reputation of being illegal squatters the government refuses to supply even the most basic services.
One of the most vulnerable groups are the children of Old Fadama. There are 12 privately run schools in the area but none with the sufficient resources to provide the children with a decent education. Access to education is a basic human right, which every child ought to be entitled to without question. There is a lack of teachers, sanitation and resources for learning. Without outside help, from you and me, these children will be trapped in the cycle of poverty.
It is our aim to provide these children with the chance they all need. Projects Abroad Human Rights Office (PAHO) is currently running various projects in Old Fadama, such as a weekly ‘Slum School’, which seeks to educate children about basic human rights concepts. PAHO also works alongside Fadama Legal Assistance Program (FLAP), to educate residents on issues that directly affect their community.
Conducting these sessions is not enough. Without the resources things can go no further. It is our aim to be able to provide the community with hope, a chance to live a life without worry or restriction; an opportunity for change. We are raising money in order to allow us to purchase much-needed textbooks for the schools. Any donation will go a long way to helping these children break the poverty cycle. Just £5 buys 4 life-changing books.
To us a book is adventure, knowledge and much more, but to a child in the Old Fadama slum a book could mean a way out of poverty.
