Story
WINGS (Wombourne Special Needs Support Group)is a charity which was founded by a small group of parents of children with Special Needs, becoming a registered charity in 1998.
My name is Fran Morris, and my son William, who is 18 and has autism, is someone who attends WINGS weekly, and this service provides him with the opportunity to mix with others, develop his co-ordination, speech and most importantly make him happy! WINGS run a wide variety of evening, weekend and play-scheme activities for children, providing them with a social group, sense of belonging as well as stimulus in drama, music and exercise. Importantly this also offers respite for families, and I feel comfortable William being at WINGS with the caring, trained volunteers, especially as they are able to cater for individual needs and offer 1:1 supervision if necessary.
I can attend sessions where I am able to share the experience with my son, and WINGS offer a parents' support group; providing a safe outlet, somewhere to go and have a laugh, or a cry. Regular social fundraising events also provide opportunities for families to meet other families going through the same situation and support one another.
My son William has been fishing, climbing, able to go on trips out and have a fantastic time with friends and staff.
A work colleagues husband is running the Shakespeare Marathon for WINGS, and this is the second time he will have raised funds for this charity. By raising more funds this can continue to happen, and more people can benefit from this amazing service and hopefully we can reduce the financial strain that selfless charities like this are sometimes under.
