Story

Sheffield City Council is trying to raise £150,000 for a statue to the Women of Steel.

The Women of Steel project will produce a permanent memorial in recognition of the women of Sheffield who served their city and country by working in the steel industry and factories during World War I and World War II.

Sheffield has long been recognised for its iconic steel industry and its vital role in the war effort during the both world wars.

Here in Sheffield we want to celebrate a special group of women whose exceptional work ethic, stamina and bravery in the steel factories went virtually unrecognised for years.

Now in their late 80s, 90s and even 100s, we want Sheffield’s Women of Steel to be remembered and recognised for their efforts for years to come. With your help we want to raise enough money to build a poignant memorial in the heart of Sheffield city centre, celebrating the Women of Steel.

We want to raise the profile of these iconic women, and celebrate their remarkable effort with fundraising events across the city to make the Women of Steel statue a reality.

Internationally acclaimed artist Martin Jennings has been commissioned to make the statue, which will be placed in Sheffield City Centre. You can see what the statue will look like and find out more details about the project at www.sheffield.gov.uk/womenofsteel

The Council has committed £28K so far to the project.

South Yorkshire Community Foundation (SYCF) will be raising the money locally on behalf of Women of Steel.
